Sustainability
Sustainable packaging options — with paperwork that survives an ESG audit.
Procurement teams under sustainability targets need more than a 'made from recycled materials' claim on a website. They need certification numbers, recycled-content percentages by SKU, ink composition disclosures, and end-of-life documentation. Apex provides all four as standard.
FSC-certified corrugated
Apex holds FSC chain-of-custody certification on its corrugated lines. Every order can be supplied with the certification number and a stamped chain-of-custody declaration. FSC-certified product carries the FSC label on the carton if requested.
What it means: the fibre is traceable from a responsibly managed forest through the mill, the converter, and Apex, with each link audited.
Recycled content
| Product | Typical PCR content | Maximum available |
|---|---|---|
| Kraft liner (single-wall) | 30 – 50% | 80% |
| Medium fluting | 70 – 100% | 100% |
| Bleached liner | 30 – 50% | 50% |
| Polybag film (LDPE/HDPE) | 0% (standard) | 30 – 50% PCR |
| Compostable polybag film | n/a | EN 13432 certified |
Inks and coatings
- Soy-based and vegetable-based inks on flexo lines. Lower VOC than petroleum-based.
- Water-based coatings on most retail packaging.
- No PFAS in any of Apex's grease-resistant food-contact coatings — independently tested.
Compostable polybag film
EN 13432-certified compostable polybag film for buyers with composting infrastructure. Use cases: organic food brands, garden/horticulture brands, compost-bag retail.
Important note: compostable film only composts in industrial composting facilities. It is not home-compostable. Apex will clarify the right disposal pathway for your customer base.
Carbon-footprint disclosure
For large customers under Scope 3 reporting, Apex can provide a packaging-specific carbon footprint estimate using the European COMET methodology — kg CO₂-equivalent per 1,000 units, calculated against material, transport, and end-of-life. Available on standing customers with annual volume thresholds.
What sustainability claims Apex will and will not make
Apex will state:
- FSC certification number and chain-of-custody status.
- PCR percentage by SKU.
- Ink composition.
- End-of-life classification (recyclable / compostable / landfill).
Apex will not state:
- "Eco-friendly" without specifying which dimension (it's a meaningless term).
- Recyclability claims without verifying local infrastructure.
- Carbon-neutrality unless verified by a third party with offsets.
The reason: sustainability claims face increasing regulatory scrutiny in Canada (Competition Bureau enforcement under amended Competition Act). Greenwashing has real legal exposure. Apex's claims are conservative and documented.
